Dr Toman examined my left hip and determined at my age, 68, I was a candidate for a replacement. I was reluctant and he understood my reservation. He repaired, (not replaced) the joint and 3 months later it is healing nicely. Although I know I will eventually need a replacement, I am very pleased with the results. I enjoy Dr Toman’s candid advice and straight forward approach. I will certainly call on him when I do need a replacement. I have 100% confidence in his advice, recommendations and surgical skills.

Dr. Toman repaired a torn meniscus in my left knee. It’s the same knee I had done about 13 years ago while living in DC. The first time I had the surgery, I was unable to walk for a week and had to have intensive physical therapy to regain muscle control. When I learned I would need the same surgery again, I was concerned about the time I would lose from work as I am self-employed. However, I was able to stand on my leg within minutes after the surgery and was able to walk out of the surgery center without so much as crutches! In less than a week I was back to work, and a month later I am taking scuba diving lessons! I was impressed with Dr. Toman from the moment I met him, and even more so after this surgery. I would, and have, highly recommend him to anyone looking for an orthopedic surgeon!

My name is Alan Savela, and I am 70 years old. I have been having problems with both of my knees since at least 2009. In 2009 in Michigan I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee for a torn meniscus and things settled down for awhile. Although my right knee still presented some problems, I chose not to do anything at the time. In mid-summer 2011 my right knee was aching, giving out, and causing pain in my back. When I went to my primary care doctor, I could barely walk; I was in a lot of pain. He ordered an MRI, and referred me to Dr. Toman. My first appointment with Dr. Toman was enlightening, and at the same time very reassuring. My wife and I viewed the X-rays with him, and he carefully explained the problems he saw: arthritic damage, and bone-on-bone rubbing with a grossly lacerated meniscus. Dr. Toman recommended Total Knee Replacement surgery to which we agreed. He got things moving and we set up a tentative surgery date. Dr. Toman recommended, and we agreed, that he use a computer-aided alignment tool to ensure that my leg was properly aligned. It worked beautifully. Few insurances cover the cost of this tools usage–approximately $300, so persons considering this surgery are advised by Dr. Toman that this is likely to be an out-of-pocket expense. On January 24, 2012, I had the surgery at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte. The doctors, nurses, and staff could not have been more supportive. Dr. Toman was very attentive and made sure that I was not having ANY pain or discomfort. Dr. Toman also recommended using the Otto Bock constant motion machine, which I used frequently each day, both in hospital and then when I came home. He also ordered home nursing and physical therapy. The nurses and therapist came each day performing their work efficiently and comfortingly. Also ordered was Physical Therapy at Fitness Quest, Bobcat Trail, North Port. My flexion and range of motion are excellent. It has now been three months since the surgery. I can walk without assistance. I have had some discomfort in my right hip as it adjusts to the new knee and my new gait. Dr. Toman was able to relieve the discomfort with a painless cortisone shot in my hip joint. He reassured me that this was a normal part of the recovery. I am able to sleep through the night without any pain or discomfort. Dr. Toman is a very capable, talented, energetic, and reassuring doctor. I have no reservations about recommending him. My wife and I think he is great!

I had been suffering from pain in my left hip for quite some time. It was time for me to obtain a formal, professional evaluation. I learned that a Dr. Toman was using a procedure which was less invassive and had patients back on their feet in half the time. I made the appointment and Dr. Toman’s diagnosis was the hip was definitely the problem. He suggested using the anterior approach. (Coming in from the front of the hip) There would be less damage to muscle and many less don’ts in recovery. The afternoon after surgery I was on my feet and moving. The next day I had two sessions with therapy. After bed exercises, I was marched down the hall. This was very positive. I did so well that I was released a day early. My home therapist told me that I would progress very rapidly and sure enough, I did. I continued therapy with Lawrence Martin in Dr. Toman’s facility. Again, I completed the therapy skills quickly. I highly recommend Dr. Toman and his staff for any joint problems.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the professional, compassionate and caring treatment that I received from Dr. Toman after an accident that I had, resulting in an injury to my shoulder. I appreciated the caring manner in which he explained my injury along with the expected results as well as options including Physical Therapy and/or surgical repair. He patiently answered my questions and provided encouragement during each visit, as I often needed. I continued to receive this type of treatment and care at each of many subsequent visits to his office and he often checked on me during my therapy treatments during the months that followed. At each visit, Dr. Toman exhibited a great deal of patience and care to answer my questions and address my concerns. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Toman and am very satisfied with the results of his care and have a deep appreciation and respect for his professional skills and capabilities. I feel like I am part of a family when I come through the doors of his office. His staff is some of the best Ive ever met. Coby, Diane, Jackie and staff always take such good care of me and are able to answer all my questions about medications and appointments. They each demonstrate superior professionalism and compassion for their patients. Their smiles are infectious. I have rarely encountered a physician as dedicated and involved as Dr. Toman. The extra care and time he took getting to know me and tirelessly answering all my questions made a difficult and unpleasant situation so much easier. His passion for his profession is evident and I have and will continue to recommend him to my family, friends and acquaintances. I not only had a great doctor to take care of my shoulder, I also made a great friend as well.

I highly recommend Dr Toman if you ever need shoulder surgery. I had a torn rotator cuff and biceps tendon. I play a lot of Tennis, and the doctor told me to wait at least six months before returning to Tennis because I had three major tears. But being impatient as I am, I started playing easy at four months. Now at five months, I am playing all out.

Hello, my name is Jay and I broke my wrist in two places. I saw Dr. Toman and he gave me the option of fixing my wrist. He did the surgery and i was ready to golf in two weeks. He did an excellent job. He looks like he is 20 years old but he has the expertise of someone as old as me. He jokes that I look like I am 120! For the record I am a very active 80 year old. Thanks so much. We would recommend him to anyone.
